Ozone Therapy

What is Ozone?

It is a gas consisting of three oxygen atoms and is used in medical treatments due to its oxidative properties. Ozone therapy means the application of ozone gas to the body in a controlled manner.

Ozone gas consists of three oxygen atoms with the chemical formula O3. Ozone, which is found in the atmosphere in nature, is formed in the high atmosphere by the action of sunlight and forms the ozone layer, a layer that protects the earth from harmful solar rays. In the medical context, ozone gas is often used mixed with medical oxygen and produced through ozone generators. Ozone gas is a colorless gas at room temperature with a characteristic odor. It helps to maintain the biological balance. It blocks harmful UV rays and makes life possible. Ozone, formed by the electric arcs that occur at the moment of the sun's ultraviolet ray (90%) and lightning (10%), exists around the earth as a protective shield and protects living things from the sun's radiation effect. Ozone, which is formed as a result of lightning, cleans the air. It is the ozone that we inhale as the smell of fresh air, which creates this feeling in the air, which occurred during lightning. It is ozone gas that gives the blue color to the sky.

What are the general effects of ozone?

  • Cell regeneration stimulating effect: Ozone promotes the regeneration of cells.
  • Antioxidant system activation: Ozone helps in the fight against free radicals by stimulating antioxidant systems.
  • Microcirculation increase: Ozone increases blood flow, allowing tissues to be better nourished.
  • Increase in erythrocyte membrane elasticity and elasticity: Ozone increases the membrane elasticity and elasticity of red blood cells.
  • Reduction in blood viscosity and restoration of circulation: Ozone regulates the circulatory system by increasing the fluidity of blood.
  • Reducing the preload of the heart effect: Ozone supports heart health by reducing the load on the heart.
  • Antimicrobial effect: Ozone has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal effects.
  • Anti-inflammatory effect: Ozone reduces inflammation
  • Antiallergic effect: Ozone therapy contributes to the regulation of the immune system and the reduction of inflammation. These effects help relieve allergy symptoms by reducing the excessive release of immunoglobulins and histamine.
  • Immune stimulating, immune modulator, ing, and immune suppressant effect: Ozone regulates the immune system.
  • Leukocyte enhancer, phagocytosis enhancer, interferon, interleukin, TNF-alpha enhancing effect:Ozone strengthens the immune system.
  • Fast wound healing effect: Ozone helps wounds heal faster.
  • Ozone allows more oxygen to be transported to the tissues.
  •
  • Additive effect for some treatments: Ozone increases its effects when u d in addition to other treatments.
  • Ozone is effective against cancer cells. It has an inhibitory effect on tumor angiogenesis. Ozone prevents the formation of blood vessels of tumors.
  • Sterilizing, disinfectant effect: Ozone neutralizes microorganisms.
  • Detoxification effect: Ozone helps in cleansing the body from toxins.
  • Epithelializing and granulation effect: Ozone promotes tissue healing.
  • Reduces the formation of plaques with an oxidizing effect on arterial plaques.
  • Ozone supports energy production. Increases ATP production by accelerating the Krebs cycle
  • Ozone regulates blood sugar levels with an insulin-like effect.
  • Reduces ozone, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels.
  • Analgesic effect: Ozone relieves pain.

Ozone therapy in a nutshell;

  • It has an anti-aging effect. Due to the effects described above, cell regeneration delays aging with a detoxification effect, ensuring that it is repaired.
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Ozone therapy is effective in the treatment of muscle and joint pain, conditions associated with lack of energy and mental, such as chronic fatigue syndrome.
  • Infections: Ozone therapy is used to combat bacterial, viral and fungal infections with its antimicrobial properties.
  • Autoimmune Diseases: Ozone therapy helps regulate the immune system in the treatment of autoimmune diseases. It relieves the symptoms of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
  • It is effective in the treatment of vascular diseases, previous myocardial infarction, combating stress, treating hyperlipidemia, treating cellulite, and wounds that do not heal, regulating kidney function, helping existing treatments in the treatment of intestinal diseases.

What are the treatment process and application methods?

  • Ozone Injection: In this method, ozone gas is injected directly under the skin or intramuscular. Injection points are determined depending on the condition being treated. Ozone reduces inflammation regionally and promotes tissue regeneration.
  • Autohemotherapy: In this method, some blood is taken and mixed with ozone gas. Then, ozone-enriched blood is injected back into the same person either intramuscularly or intravenously. This method helps to regulate the immune system and increase oxygenation.
  • Rectal Application: Ozone-enriched gas or ozonated oil is applied through the rectum. This method helps to improve intestinal health, balance the intestinal flora and has systemic effects.
  • Ozone Water or Oil Bath: In this method, ozone gas is added to water or oil and applied to the body as a bath or compress. Ozonated water or oil is absorbed through the skin, providing antioxidant effects.

Ozone therapy is usually performed in sessions. The duration and frequency of each session varies depending on the condition being treated, the patient's state of health, and treatment goals. Usually, treatment sessions are held at weekly or biweekly intervals. Each session usually lasts between 10 and 60 minutes. The total duration of treatment and the number of sessions are determined depending on factors such as the severity of the disease and the duration of response.

To whom ozone therapy is not applied

  • Pregnancy: Ozone therapy is usually not recommended during pregnancy. Because the effects of ozone are not fully understood during pregnancy, and there may be possible risks. It is absolutely important to discuss with a doctor about ozone therapy during pregnancy.
  • Bleeding Disorders: Ozone therapy should not be applied to people with blood clotting disorders or should be applied carefully. It may increase the risk of bleeding in people with a tendency to bleeding.
  • Thyroid Problems: Ozone therapy should be administered carefully to people with thyroid problems in which the thyroid gland is over or underworked. This should be taken into account because ozone can have an effect on thyroid function.
  • Organ Transplantation: Ozone therapy should be applied carefully i n people who have had an organ transplant. Since immunosuppressive drugs are used after organ transplantation, the risks and benefits associated with ozone therapy should be evaluated.
  • Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency: G6PD deficiency can cause an increase in the sensitivity of cells to oxidative stress. Ozone therapy can lead to increased oxidative stress, which can lead to side effects in people with G6PD deficiency. Therefore, careful evaluation should be carried out before ozone therapy is applied to people with G6PD deficiency.

An important point is that caution should be exercised when applying ozone therapy. It is important that the application is performed correctly, sterile conditions are ensured and appropriate doses are used.

Medical ozone is different from natural ozone; it is formed by mixing pure ozone with pure oxygen in a certain proportion. The obtained medical ozone is given to the patient in certain doses. In ozone applications, there are different dose applications for each disease. The same dose is not given to every patient and every disease. The treatment dose will be decided by your doctor. It is necessary to have a good examination, to question the existing diseases and the drugs used. In some cases, blood thinners and medications may need to be discontinued.

As with any medical procedure, if you are considering ozone therapy, it is important to consult a doctor who has a certificate and competence in this regard and follow their recommendations.
